Alumni week is fast approaching, sooo damn fast that I have now forgotten and
been reminded of it about 15 million times now.

Anyhow, this means I will return to my old haunt and spin a radio show this
coming Saturday morning, 4/25 from 4 in the morning til 6am, 91.3fm WBNY. I
know this will be more convenient for friends in foreign lands where it will
not be an ungodly time of the morning but still...If I can make it, so can
you. Sleep is overrated, so if you are awake and by a computer please tune in
at http://www.buffalostate.edu/wbny/webradio/

Again, http://www.buffalostate.edu/wbny/webradio/

What will I play? Stuff and or things. Probably, new-ish material from The
Bats, stuff from the Triffids, Go-Betweens, The Fall, etc (i.e. check out my
Last.fm profile http://www.last.fm/user/squidexplosion to get an idea)...Plus
Hunter S. Thompson will return from the dead and answer the most important
question of our times. Seriously. Spread the word, or not, it's okay.

-Rock, rock on.
Robin

Hello all fine folks,

So my diploma actually showed up a few weeks ago, so now it's really, really official. I've graduated college. Up to this point I kept expecting something to go wrong somewhere. I expected to find my name not listed in the graduation program, or that the diploma wouldn't show up (and that I'd call them and then I'd get the fun news, that no, I didn't qualify). Or something.

So it's just real surreal, nice, but surreal. Next stop, job, graduate school, both or all three!

    <lj:music>Autobiography - Sloan</lj:music>

"..They figure who'd know better than I." -Sloan

Hello all,

Well it just dawned on me that the last time I actually posted something on here was about a year ago. Good lord, I just cannot keep up with the lightning speed of, well...life sometimes. But a lot has happened since my last post, notably I have graduated from college. So hot hot damn, whew. Now the question is, what do I do next? Go to graduate school (in New Zealand if possible, remember Australia and NZ is where the music comes from)?! Do I start my own lucrative home based business?! Do I fall in love and have sex?! Start a band and become famous?! Sit around and be blissfully bored?! (Right now I am really leaning towards that last one.)

All I can say is that I will figure this all out eventually. Or not. You know me. Though I have been told that the one word for the future will be plastics. Or maybe I haven't been told that. Again...

On another note, I can say that in the reasonable future I will be (re)learning* how to play guitar. To see the beautiful graduation gift that is on it's way clicky here: Ibanez AF86 Artcore Semi-Hollowbody Guitar (Violin Sunburst)

*I did teach myself a little bit of guitar playing, but it's all gone right out of my head. So, yeah, starting over on that one.

I will post graduation pictures later, holy crow I did not know how damn boring commencement ceremonies could be. Hard on the feets too, as they had us standing, a lot.

-Rock, rock on.

Robin.

RIP: Grant McLennan 1958-2006

I haven't really had the need (or time) to update this blog as of late, but for this I had to post.

Man, the Go-Betweens are really one of my absolute favorite bands, who, over their immense career have created some seriously sublime music. I have never, ever, heard a band and decided that I had to have every single piece of their discography, immediately, lest I go insane. The Go-Betweens were that band for me, a perfect band, one whom I've developed an enormous passion for. Barely a single day goes by where I don't listen to at some Go-Betweens. I am hard pressed to find a song that I don't at least like, and the majority of them I love.

It's really wonderful to hear the band evolve over time, especially so with Grant. The leap from his nearly absent voice on Send Me a Lullaby to his greater confidence as a singer on Before Hollywood are a treat, and considering that he sings the quintessential Go-B's track "Cattle and Cane" it's a damn good thing that he found his voice. Some of my favorite songs of the Go-B's are Grant driven, of course the above mentioned classic, "Unkind & Unwise," "In the Core of a Flame," "Palm Sunday (On Board the SS Within)," plus "Love Goes On!" and "Was There Anything I Could Do?"

Grant McLennan's death really is shocking to me. I'm not totally oblivious to mortality, but damn it, people shouldn't die when they are 48. An amazing musician who will be greatly missed. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Thanks for the music Grant.

This is taken from the Go-Betweens website:

http://www.go-betweens.net/

6th May 2006

Grant McLennan

On Saturday 6th May, legendary Australian singer songwriter Grant W McLennan died in his sleep at his home in Brisbane.

McLennan was one of Australias greatest songwriters who created an outstanding musical legacy as a founder member of The Go-Betweens and as a solo artist. He was enjoying enormous acclaim for the bands most recent album Oceans Apart, which has received five star reviews around the world and won had a prestigious ARIA award.

McLennan was born in Rockhampton, Queensland on 12th February 1958. While attending university in Brisbane he met fellow student Robert Forster and together they formed The Go-Betweens. After releasing a string of singles the band recorded their debut album, Send Me A Lullaby, in 1981. The Go-Betweens recorded a series of exceptional albums that achieved widespread critical acclaim and were fundamental in bringing Australian music to a global audience. He was an unparalleled lyricist and a prolific and meticulous composer. His auto-biographical masterpiece Cattle and Cane was recently voted by the Australian Performing Rights Association as one of the ten greatest Australian songs of all time.

In 1989 The Go-Betweens took a ten year sabbatical and McLennan recorded four powerful solo albums including the vivacious debut Watershed and the epic Horsebreaker Star as well as forming satellite groups like Jack Frost with Steve Kilbey of The Church and The Far Out Corporation with Iain Haug of Powderfinger.

When Robert Forster and Grant McLennan reformed The Go-Betweens in 2000, the band was greeted with adulation by a new generation of musicians like Belle and Sebastian for whom, their songs had been an inspirational teenage soundtrack. The three albums the band subsequently released were universally acknowledged as containing some of McLennans greatest compositions.

McLennan was a passionate supporter of the arts, extremely well-read and maintained a keen interest in all contemporary music, cinema and visual art. He was an exceptionally charming and polite man who endeared himself to everyone who met him and was one of the rare individuals worthy of the epithet larger than life.

His singular contribution to music and his commitment to his craft simply cannot be understated. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his mother, sister, girlfriend Emma and lifetime musical colleague Robert Forster.

Bernard MacMahon, Lo-Max Records, 6th May 2006

I didn't even make a copy of it for myself as the show was such shit. Really, I spent most of the time elbow deep in swabs, alcohol and labels. But the board/console is clean(er) and properly labeled now. I mean you can actually read it, so that is good.

So yes, nothing of interest to note about this week's show. Carrboro? (okay it's near Chappel Hill...but still.) I was really hoping for a Toronto date, but it looks like I'm going to have to see if I can make it Chicago, NYC or Carrboro. Whoooo wants to road trip?? I'm also a bit surprised that they didn't ditch the second NYC area date in favor of doing something in Boston.

On a good note the US release of "Oceans Apart" will feature the bonus disc (I'm assuming in limited quantities) and a sticker. Already the album has gotten a five star review by Mojo and a four star review by Q magazine. Here's to waiting for May 3rd!

*I just got done looking the Carrboro city website, and they are advertising a record show on their top page, I respect that.

So, this weeks show was supposed to be special. "Next weeks show will be special," I said. Well, I lied. It will be run of the mill (for me anyway). There will be a special show of Decades coming in the next few weeks, and I'm not even talking about the Devo special: DEVOTED, February 27th from 5-8pm. No there will be something other than that, something to make you sing. Or get very annoyed at. But it's a secret, and I don't want to spoil the surprise, so I won't.

Horrible, I know.

Still there is the Devo show to look forward to. That will be fun, don't forget to tune in (if you can) to 91.3FM WBNY on February 27th from 5-8pm for nothing but Devo, Devo, Devo.

Rock.

Or not.

<lj:music>The damned theme to the BBC program "Cash in the Attic"</lj:music>

Hello,

So I've haven't been on here in awhile. Well, I've been busy you see with stuff and... stuff. The problem with me and the internet, or me and computers for that matter, is that I go through periods where I just lose interest in them. Sure, as a general rule I love them but that leads to me spending too much time on them and then that leads to burnout. Then I spend time away from said internet/computer and when the burnout has subsided I end up spending too much time on the computer again. So, yes. Vicious cycle that is.

I've actually been spending a lot of time playing "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" which is really fantastic. It can be a bit buggy at times, but worth it none the less. Plus playing the dark side is a hell of a lot of fun. Sure it feels good to be all nice and goody two-shoes light side about things, but the real fun is being evil, evil, evil.

Right now I am battling a fun case of laryngitis/cold which means I can't work (not that I had to work between last Thursday and today). The drawback to a job where your main function is to talk to people is that when you lose your voice you are essentially fucked; especially when you have to talk to people over the phone.

Man, if only I could actually talk about my job here, oooh the stories I'd have to tell. Well, once I find something else I'll just have to tell a few of the classic stories, though I shall change the names to protect the semi-innocent.

Eh, I think I may go get some more rest, or eat soup... or both.

I just had a molar extracted (i.e. pulled out) and all I can say is wow.

First off, the nitrous oxide (laughing gas) just made me feel weird, and I ended up asking them to turn it off. It probably didn't help that the nose-piece had an odd fruity smell to it. Then I got about two to three shots of novocaine and off we go! Honestly it didn't hurt a bit, except for the pinching of the novocaine needle. The pressure was a bit disconcerting though. It really felt like the dentist was pulling my skull out through my nose. So now I have a hole in mouth somewhere in the back that should get an implant in it at some point. Woo hoo, and I get to go back to the dentist next week. In the mean time it's soft foods, biting down on gauze (due to the inevitable bleeding) and being numb from the novocaine.

Oh yes, and novocaine tastes like bile. How do I know what bile tastes like? I've had my gallbladder out, once you've had that done you'll know exactly what bile tastes like.

    <lj:music>I Remember Nothing - Joy Division</lj:music>

The Joy Division box set from Alchemy Records is dead, dead, dead. It's being "withdrawn" due to licensing problems. What those exact problems were, I have no idea. There is a quick snippet here. There isn't much information, but I haven't been able to find anything else so far.

I'll post more info if I can find it.

    <lj:music>Grinding Halt - The Cure</lj:music>

Looks like the Cure is set to release a big box set of rarities and B-sides. It's titled "Join the Dots: B-Sides and Rarities" will have about 71 tracks, and 80 page booklet and should be out sometime next year.

For more info check out this link.

I'll post the playlist later as I want badly to go take a bubble bath.

    <lj:music>Stop, Look and Listen - Devo</lj:music>

I mentioned tonight on the show that there are some new things happening in Spudland. Indeed there are, first Jade Dellinger and David Giffels have put out a biography of Devo. The book is entitled "Are We Not Men? We Are Devo!" This has been out for a few months now, and you can find more information on it here:

http://www.devobook.com/

The other major, very exciting happening has been the release of "The Complete Truth About De-Evolution" on DVD. This is pretty much a repackaging of some of the old laserdisc material. It is missing the video for "R U Experienced" and "Doctor Detroit." Unfortunately they couldn't get the rights from the Hendrix estate to release the "R U" video, as to why "Doctor Detroit" isn't on there I have no idea. There are some very fancy things on this DVD, including the full version of the short movie "In the Beginning Was the End: The Truth About De-evolution" and a video for "Mongoloid" by Bruce Connor (previously unreleased). I just wish this would hurry up and show up in my mailbox already.

The DVD had been origianly slated for an Oct. 28th release, but didn't end up getting released in the states until November 11th or 18th if you go by the press release on the Rhino site.

You can see the Rhino press release here: Rhino Press Release

There are a lot of places where you can buy the DVD, but in the interest of helping you out here is a link to Amazon's page for the DVD:Buy the DVD here

For some reason the Amazon.com lists the DVD as a 2000 release, it's not. So enjoy, or not.
